The endless buzz around plant-based diets has opened the doors for innovative food products. Consequently Spanky’s Kitchen is excited to be a market leader in the plant-based foods arena.  A new Culinary Institute of America-sponsored report from the market research firm Datassential, “Shifting the Protein Focus” revealed some interesting findings. The study conducted among 634 foodservice operators and 1,013 consumers identified that customers want reduced animal protein portions more than foodservice operators are providing them. That means there’s an opportunity to redesign menus and expand plant-based, alternative protein options.

Datassential believes consumer interest in and demand of alternative protein sources will continue to outpace operator activity.  For instance, have you been following the #MeatlessMonday movement?  Consumers go Meat-Free on Mondays and the campaign claims, “Skipping meat one day a week is good for you, great for your nation’s health, and fantastic for the planet.”  This is just one prime example of consumers shifting to eating less meat and more alternative protein sources.

Where do you stand as a consumer, and what plant-based options would you like to see from foodservice operators?
